Aloha Friends of the Arts! March is youth art month! Take the your kids out on this artsy town for some of these great classes and art shows! Experience Ukrainian Egg Dyeing on Good Friday, take a free art class on a Sunday, or attend our Mini Artists’ Fair on Saturday the 15th. Read on for the other great happenings around town.

March is dedicated to Watercolor Paint! We have an amazing line up of talented watercolor artists offering our Sunday art classes, as well as our more involved in-store classes. Come meet Kerri Ligatich, Sunny Seal, and Susan Laufer, and see their art on display throughout the month at Hilo Art & Glass Supply.

On Display today through March 8th, Hilo Art & Glass Supply is exhibiting all the entries in the Children’s Year of the Rat art competition that was held at Hilo’s Chinese New Year festival in Kalakaua Park on February 16th. Prizes are awaiting their owners! Parents, please pick up works at Hilo Art & Glass Supply after March 8th.

Watercolor Month climaxes with our Saturday Watercolor Art Fair on March 15th from 10AM – 4PM. The artists will be on hand to talk about their artwork, and lead hands-on demonstrations of watercolor techniques and materials. This a great opportunity to purchase a print, original artwork, or gift card. Bring the keiki for face painting with the versatile watercolor crayons, and check out our One Day Sale March 15th.

Don’t miss one of the year’s happy highlights – the Young at Art show. It will be on display at the EHCC throughout March. Also, a “Balinese Performing Arts Weekend” will be featured at the East Hawai’i Cultural Center on March 1 & 2, 2008. The Balinese dance company Purnama Sari, founded by Surapsari Megumi and Indra Sampranata will present a family workshop day and a performance for the first weekend in March. Ramayana Dance-Drama workshop for Children will be offered on March 2nd from 2:30-4:OOpm and will include a mini dance lesson, talk and shadow puppet show.

The Wailoa Center presents The Big Island’s most talented woodworkers displaying dozens of beautiful turned wood pieces crafted from beautiful native and other woods, including bowls, vases, calabashes and art objects. Next Step Drawing – youth.— 4 Wednesdays 3-5PM Starting March 12
Continue your growth in Drawing out your inner artist with Jacob Medina. Explore more involved drawing techniques for even more interesting art as you take your skills to the next level. Youth 6 and over welcome. Great for past students of Jacob’s beginning drawing classes.

Silkscreen Printing – 4 Tuesdays 6:30 – 8:30 PM starts March 4th.
In this class you will learn the basics of preparing and printing a silkscreen. Lisa Franklin and Julianna Peckinpaugh will show students how to produce quality silkscreened images with easy to use supplies that don’t require any special equipment. Anyone can silkscreen at home with success after completing this class.
Cost: $100.00

Simple Stained Glass – 4 Saturdays 10AM – 1PM starts March 8th.
Eva Anderson-Terada teaches this introduction to the copper foil method of stained glass assembly originally created by Tiffany Studios. Students will get a comprehensive education on all stained glass tools and techniques needed to assemble a small panel piece or a window hanging. This is so much more fun than struggling through all the variables alone!
Cost: $140.00

Ukrainian Easter Eggs on Good Friday – March 21st 1PM – 5PM One Day Only!
Come get in the spirit of Easter, Ukrainian style! This all-ages class is truly the fine art of egg dying. Using hot wax, parts of the egg are masked before dip dying in successive layers creating a gorgeous, vivid art egg.
Cost: $15.00 – all supplies included

Your Art: Analysis and Evaluation – Saturday March 22nd 2-5PM One Day Only!
Elfie Wilkins-Nacht will lead this insightful workshop focusing on the strengths and weaknesses in a piece of art. Elfie received her MFA from UCLA in painting and photography. She has been making art, teaching studio and art appreciation classes, and acting as a juror to art competitions for twenty years. This is a great opportunity to objectively analyze your art on the basis of its formal elements while breaking away from personal taste. Students are asked to bring in two to five pieces of their best artwork. This is your chance to get help selecting your strongest works before the EHCC’s juried art competition in April!

Cost: $15.00

Beginning Watercolor – 4 Saturdays – 2-5 PM starts March 29th.
Susan Laufer, a talented new artist in town, will teach this class in watercolor basics. Learn about material choices, how to mix gorgeous transparent colors, and how to strategically layer them. Get the inside tips on using brushes to your best advantage, and find out ways to “rescue” your little accidents.
Cost: $85.00

Kids Collage and Mixed Media
Lisa Franklin teaches this Kids’ art class for ages 6 and up. Students will have experience with a large variety of collage and other types of art materials, including acrylic paints, watercolor paints, neat collage varnishes, special tools and brushes, and lots more. Students will sink in up to their elbows and pull something creative out of themselves. This class starts up right after Next Step Drawing, in the same Wednesday time slot.
TIMES: 4 Wednesdays 3PM – 5PM starting April 9th.
COST: $85.00 most materials included.

FREE SUNDAY CLASSES — 1-4 PM – Drop ins welcome

  • March 2nd: Using Masking Fluid in Watercolors – With Sunny Seal — get sharp edges by masking off areas before you paint. Great for incredible watercolor detail, or even expressive color layering.
  • March 9th: Watercolor Fun for Everyone – with Susan Laufer — Make a watercolor postcard in this enjoyable afternoon of painting, and see if you might want more time with Susan, as she’s teaching a watercolor primer later in the month.
  • March 16th: Special Effects in Watercolor – with Kerri Ligatich — You’ll be wowed by the neat tricks you can do to create interest in your watercolors! Use salt, sponges, and other odd stuff to create gorgeous watercolor looks to spice up your paintings.
  • March 23rd: CLOSED FOR EASTER
  • March 30: New surfaces for Watercolor – Did you know you can paint watercolors on more than paper? Now you can with watercolor board, clayboard, and other neat materials that are more forgiving than paper.

Artists’ Opportunity:

The take-in for the East Hawaii Cultural Center’s Spring Juried show will be held on Saturday, March 29th from 8AM to Noon. The prospectus for this juried show is available at Hilo Art & Glass Supply.

Volcano Art Center Class, March 16th. “Fused Glass Tile Making” with Marian Fieldson. Learn the process of frit (crushed glass) painting and color fusing techniques while creating two glass tiles of your choice. After an introduction and demonstration by the instructor, you use a variety of materials and tools to design and arrange the layers of your unique creations. After the workshop, your tiles are fired and a pick up time is arranged. Ages 16 & up, and beginners, are welcome. $125 includes supplies & firing (financial aid available). Call (808) 967-8222
