Lisa Franklin teaches Making Paste Paper at Hilo Art & Glass Supply. What are paste papers? They are decorative sheets with repeat patterns created by applying color to the paper then marking into it or partially removing it with tools or fingertips. This is a centuries-old technique for making one-of-a-kind, decorative paper for using in book-binding, for gift-wrapping or collage, or as an art form in its own right. This all-inclusive one day class will be tons of fun, and you will leave with a collection of your own Paste Papers. The class is on Saturday, January 26th, from 10AM to 3PM, and the cost is $50.00, which also covers your supplies!
Elfie Wilkens-Nacht will teach Oil Paint Basics I at Hilo Art & Glass Supply. Elfie Wilkens-Nacht is a well schooled artist and experienced educator. Rather than teaching any one style, Elfie will educate new painters in the real concepts and skills that make up artistic capability. New painters will learn how to handle oil paints, as well as some of the basics of light, perspective, and color. This is a great introduction to oil paint that will give you the skills and confidence to really paint. The class meets on five Tuesdays from 3PM to 6PM starting January 29th. The cost is $100.00.
Jacob Medina’s all-time most popular drawing classes for youth and adults are Back! Jacob has earned his formal art degree from UH Hilo, and has been an award winning artist for years. His friendly, information rich style will help you learn the keys of drawing what you see. There are practical steps for anyone to improve their drawing skillls, and Jacob can walk you through them. Absolute beginners are welcome! Beginning Drawaing for Adults starts February 21st. Class will be held on four consecutive Thursdays from 4PM to 6PM. The cost is $75.00.
Coming in February, Lisa Franklin will teach “Kids Learn Color,” a fun, colorful, multi-media art class for kids ages 6 and up. Students will experiment with pastels, watercolors, colored pencil, and other colorful stuff while learning how color theory can help them make their art look better. The class will be held on four Wednesdays from 3PM to 5PM, starting February 6th. The cost is $85.00.
Also in February, Kerri Ligatich kicks off our series of watercolor classes with Florals & Foliage in Watercolor, an exploration of the many watercolor techniques available to you to handle flowers, petals, stems, and leaves. Kerri’s patient and thorough style of teaching makes her the perfect guide to finding control of this sometimes mystifying medium. Class will be held for three Tuesdays from 9:30AM to Noon. The cost is $60.00.
I’m especially delighted to announce a teacher I having been wanting to have at Hilo Art & Glass Supply for years. Ms. Margaret Stanton, muralist and local painter of fame, will teach Vibrant Acrylic Painting, for painters at all skill levels. Margaret, a.k.a “Peggy” has a very nurturing teaching style. Her goal is to help each student achieve what they are looking to achieve with acrylics, and her broad experience with the dizzying variety of Acrylic paints and mediums will steer you in the right direction. Students will learn about using lots of color, responsibly! The class takes place on four Saturdays from 1PM to 4PM, starting February 23rd. The cost is $85.00.
The Free Sunday Art classes at Hilo Art & Glass Supply take place every Sunday from noon to 4PM.

- January 27th:Collage techniques with Lisa Franklin. Come make a mini collage, or a decoupage gift card in this experimental day of collage. Lisa Franklin will show you neat tricks, and solutions on which glue and varnish to use. All materials provided; personal papers and images welcome.

Notice to artists!
Do you like to share your talents with people? Do you have a portable art or craft that you could sell in a craft booth setting? Hilo Art & Glass Supply is planning to do monthly “Mini Art Fairs,” and although we don’t have much space, we can host between four and six artists, depending on the type of work. The space is free for the artist if they do a demonstration of their art in the store. February is Fabric arts month, and the Mini Fabric Arts Fair will be on Saturday February 16th. March is Watercolors month, (thanks watercolorists, keep me posted!), April we will focus on the Glass Arts, May is Oil Painting month, June is dedicated to Printmaking, July’s demos and fair will focus on Acrylic paint. Stay tuned for more, and drop me a line if you have an interest in doing an art demonstration with the products at Hilo Art & Glass Supply.
Thanks for your interest, and have a creative month!
