Golden Acrylics sent their certified acrylic technician, Nina Deckert, out here to little old Hilo to train our staff in the finer points of acrylic paint mediums. We got a big complement when Nina told me that my staff members stood out as some of the most knowledgeable, engaging, and friendly people working in any art store in the country! And now they are a little more knowledgeable.

Calling the Art Community!
It’s happening! A wonderful community art philanthropy project has been launched on the Big Island! “It’s a Honu World” is a concept project dreamed up by several arty folks and made possible by the Media maneuverings of Karen Kaufman at Mo Media. The Plan is this – “Champions” sponsor a blank life-sized Honu (Hawaiian sea turtle), “Artists” paint the Honu according to their wildest dreams, and “Heroes” buy the Honu at auction. The proceeds of each Honu go to a charity identified by the Champion who sponsored the turtle. This is our island version of the “painted pony” project you may have heard of in New Mexico. Interested? Check out www.itsahonuworld.com and click on Read More to get to the sign up and info page.
Volcano Art Center is featuring woodblock prints by Andrea Pro in their gallery this month. Visiting UK environmental artist Keith Barrett will be teaching environmental sculpture and woodcarving classes as well as giving interesting artist’s presentations. Barrett’s sculptures are rooted in landscape and constructed with natural materials such as wood, rock, earth, and plantings. For more details check out www.volcanoartcenter.org.
Kudos to the East Hawaii Cultural Center! They have gallantly stepped up and granted an aerosol art wall on the mauka side of their back building. The wall will be repainted by select volunteers every month or so. If you would like to join in the painting, call the EHCC at 961-5711 Please consider a donation of your leftover housepaint or spraypaint, or even gift certificates for the paint, or even a few dollars to the Center would be a huge help to beautify the funky little park above the EHCC.
Call to Artists! The 31st Annual Big Island Fall Arts Festival is accepting entries to this juried art show on Saturday October 27th 8AM to 12PM at the East Hawaii Cultural Center. The jurors this year are Darrell Orwig and Elfie Wilkens-Nacht. For more information you can print the prospectus from their newsletter on line at www.ehcc.org.
Habitat for Humanity is still looking to add to the group of artists who will work on the Prince Kuhio Mall mural. If you are interested in participating with this mural (just think, you’d be one of the most seen artists in Hilo!) you can contact Stacey Hargrove at pacificenterprises@earthlink.net.
Thanks for your interest, and have a creative month!
