August 2007 Aloha Friends of the Arts! Newsletter
by Hilo Art & Glass Supply, Eva Anderson
August is shaping up to be a very artsy month! The sheer numbers of artists represented in the art spaces of Hilo is impressive.
The long awaited Hilo in Our H’Arts opens this Friday, August 4th at the Wailoa Center from 5PM to 7PM. Moon Brown and company will be entertaining and all participants are asked to bring a pot luck dish or pupus. The awards will be announced at 5:30 and prizes will be distributed. A big mahalo goes out to jurors Sig Zane and friends for making the difficult selections.
On Saturday’s take in, we received something like 226 pieces, while the Wailoa Center usually only hangs 100 pieces comfortably! When I saw that there was going to be many strong pieces left out due to lack of space, I offered to host an “Overflow Show” at Hilo Art & Glass Supply. While the art supply store may not be a prestigious art gallery, we are delighted to provide more space for some really fun, meaningful artwork. The “Overflow Show” will open with a small reception on Friday, August 10th at 4:30.
From 5-8PM that evening, there is another art reception around the corner from Hilo Art & Glass Supply, at the Arthur Johnsen Gallery that features the work of Arthur Johnsen, Gail Duituturaga, Tuko Fujisaki, Cosette Bonjour, & Esther Szegedy. The Arthur Johnsen Gallery is presenting “Beyond the Big Island” a collection of landscapes from Europe, America, the Pacific Islands and more.
The East Hawaii Cultural Center is featuring a dynamic collection of work from all of the teachers at the cultural center and their students. The teachers are Lee Walczuk, who teaches sculpture and puppetry, Lisa Franklin, who teaches printmaking, and me, Eva Anderson-Terada, teaching stained glass and glass bead making. The opening reception is this Friday, August 3rd from 5-7PM.
Yet another great first Friday event, August 3rd is the public opening of the Special Exhibit Center of the Hilo Art Museum in the Hilo Ironworks building. This also starts at 5PM. All first Fridays are admission free! Check out their De Koonings and the Picasso while you enjoy the photography of Carley Fonville.
SALE SALE SALE!!! August 13th – September 16th
Our biggest sale of the year, besides maybe the last half of December, is our Back to School Sale. The saving start big time on August 13th and go all the way to September 16th. We will have lots of the basic supplies on sale as well as some clearance items and great deals on certain sets and overstock. We got a special deal on some great oil and acrylic case sets direct from the manufacturer, and you will see those on sale for ridiculous prices (like $19.95 for a set that normally costs $47.00!)
This will also be a great time to stock up on your paper pads, acrylic paint, canvas and brushes because all of that will be on sale for the students. We offer a 10% UH and HCC student discount that applies on top of our sale prices, so please spread the word to the students and their parents – we will personally walk you through your list and see that you have everything you need to get those first assignments done promptly. We promise that the time, hassle and money you save by shopping local will be well worth finding a parking place in downtown Hilo!!!
The Free Sunday Art Classes at Hilo Art & Glass Supply from 12- 4PM:
8/5: Hot Tips for Soft Pastels
Soft pastels are the easiest medium with which to get great results fast! You just need a little advice on how to deal with these colorful little sticks, and you will be off and running! Plus, this is a great art form for the short attention span because you can get so much color and so much happening in so little time! Come play!
8/12: Airbrushing w/ Scott Moon
Airbrushing is the best way to paint very precisely on a wide variety of surfaces. Come check out the variety of paints you can spray on with an airbrush and some of the neat things artist Scott Moon does with his airbrush.
8/19: Fabric Design w/ Oil Bars
Shiva oil bars are a gorgeous, rich color bar that can be used with traditional oil paints, but they can also be used directly on fabric for a permanent, gorgeous effect, even on dark fabrics.
8/26: Plutonium G Spray Paints
Check out the very best artists spray paint I could find on the market! This fabulous paint will give you great coverage and permanence without primers or sealers on a wide variety of materials including metal and plastic. This paint is great for graffiti-style art as well as set design, home projects, large backgrounds, and whatever else you can imagine.
Help Convert “taggers” to Graffiti Artists
Hilo Art & Glass Supply is launching a community push to convert “taggers” to graffiti artists with safe practice zones, public competitions, and fun, safe events for at-risk youth. Come witness the artsy birth of this movement, and be in our crew for community change. We plan to coordinate murals, especially in ugly places, and I welcome any business owners who have a wall available to contact me, even for a temporary mural.
Given the choice, these youths would rather be artists than criminals, and I plan to give them a path to that end, and cool role models to mentor them. Contact me at hiloart@hawaiiantel.net with your comments and suggestions or if you want to be part of the change! I really need any artists over 25 who have experience with graffiti art to contact me to help mentor these youths. Other communities have done the same thing and seen a drop in vandalism, and I hope to do the same for Hilo.

Habitat for Humanity is still looking to add to the group of artists who will work on the Prince Kuhio Mall mural. If you are interested in participating with this mural (just think, you’d be one of the most seen artists in Hilo!) you can contact Stacey Hargrove at pacificenterprises@earthlink.net.
