Please attend our Free Acrylic Technical Talk on Tuesday Sept 11th from 3PM to 6PM at Hilo Art & Glass Supply. Golden Acrylics is sending their certified acrylic technician, Nina Deckert, out here to little old Hilo to give our customers a free lecture/demonstration on acrylic paints and their properties. Golden makes one of the most popular, high quality artists acrylic paints on the market today.
The Hilo in Our H’Arts show has closed and the people have chosen! Gallery visitors were invited to choose a favorite piece, and two works took the lead, one from the Adult category and one from the youth. Phil Intheblank won in the adult category with his panoramic painting of Mauna Kea above hilo, and Star Pupil won in the youth category with Tin Roofs and Sidewalks.
The Free Sunday Art Classes at Hilo Art & Glass Supply from 12- 4PM:
9/2: Party at Petroglyph Press – Yep! Instead of a demo, we celebrated with David and Christine Reed in honor of the 45 year anniversary of Petroglyph Press.
9/9: Painting with Oil Bars - Jacob Medina will help you discover this juicy medium for those looking for instant gratification! Come smear bold color just for the joy of it!
9/16: Fabric Embellishment - Camille Stellar, a seamstress herself, will introduce several simple but gorgeous methods for embellishing fabric with paints, as well as ways to use these personalized patches in clothing. You’ll love her handmade artists’ aprons!
9/23: Kid Art Day - Bring your Keikis (but please don’t drop them off!) for a kids art day anytime between noon and 3:30PM. No sign up needed, just come by to let the kids try some art supplies made just for them! Kids will need 30mins to an hour to experience everything, so plan ahead!
9/30: Glass Painting – This is the crafty, easy version that makes use of all your old glasses and jars. Eva Anderson-Terada will give you some great ideas and simple tips for successful glass painting that can turn a toss-away glass into a gift-away glass. We’ll even provide the jars and glasses!
First Friday Art Shows Opening
The Wailoa Center is featuring a five artist show called “Five Nutshells in a Dream,” a group showing of the works of Tobias Brill, Meidor Hu, Sally Lundburg, Keith Tallett, and Pamela Ybanez. Other Artistic Opportunities
The Life Drawing phenomenon goes on! I’m pretty sure the EHCC is still having life drawing, but it has been moved to a smaller room – still first and third Tuesdays. The Hilo Art Museum hosts a life drawing night every Wednesday from 6-9PM, and they charge $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Also, Doug and Susie Ball are hosting Life Drawing at their studio in Laupahoehoe on the second and fourth Saturdays, Sept 8th and Sept 22nd. The session goes from 9AM to 12noon, accompanied by a pot luck brunch for munching. The session will be a long pose for painters and sculptors. For correct directions and information, call 962-6572.
Habitat for Humanity is still looking to add to the group of artists who will work on the Prince Kuhio Mall mural. If you are interested in participating with this mural (just think, you’d be one of the most seen artists in Hilo!) you can contact Stacey Hargrove at pacificenterprises@earthlink.net.
Classes at Hilo Art Museum, go to www.hiloartmuseum.org and look under “education” to sign up. In September, Kerri Ligatich is teaching her popular “Step by Step” watercolor class which runs 7 weeks on Saturdays 9AM – Noon and starts September 8th. Also, Ted Coombs teaches a FREE oil and/or acrylic class on Saturdays from 10AM – 11:30AM. It is a drop-in class that started Sept 1st, so by all means, drop in!
